Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
